Lying in Ethics Class
Yesterday I had my first tutorial for my philosophy elective, Introduction to Applied Ethics. Everybody present was required to state their name, their degree, and why they chose to take the course. Surprisingly, most people said they simply needed to fill their schedule with a three-credit elective.
I gave a hilariously cliched answer, using lines like “it’s important for future business leaders to be aware of ethical issues”. (Note that I was the only student in the class wearing a suit and tie because I had to attend a corporate recruiting event that evening). The TA looked at me and said, “Are you going to lie to us all semester?” I paused and said, “Yes”. Then most of the class laughed, including the TA.
I don’t know if the TA thinks I’m a liar simply because I’m a business student, or because I gave an obviously rehearsed answer. Either way, the next few classes should be amusing.
